1. Interview with Principal
The interview begins with Speaking and Listening Assessment. Students are asked some conversational questions to get to know a little about each applicant. This short interview also gives me information about their speaking and listening skills as they listen to my questions and answer in English. I look at how they answer to show understanding of the questions and depth of speaking ability.
Next, based on their application and my short interview, I share a text for students to read out loud. The text is level based with corresponding grade levels, however if a student shows lower or higher ability, the text is adjusted to their level. For example, students in Grade 8 or higher are expected to read at Level Z but if they are non-native speakers, this is adjusted to a level to meet their needs. At the end of the text, I ask comprehension questions to demonstrate their level of understanding. The results of the interview along with their text fluency and comprehension will guide my recommendation about ESL.
